On September 26th, The House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment Energy and Commerce Committee held a hearing on “Building a 21st Century Infrastructure for America: Water Stakeholders’ Perspectives”.

A few months ago, the SEC was approached about being the US conduit for a US space company delegation to Brazil. The delegation would participate in high level meetings with both Brazilian space companies and government officials. My counterpart in Brazil Reeve Wolford and I have met with both Department of State officials and Trump Administration lead for Western Hemisphere issues Landon Loomis on the concept and all parties have been supportive.

On May 11th, President Trump signed off on the long-awaited cybersecurity executive order, promoting IT modernization and Shared Services. White House Assistant to the President for Homeland Security stated that " part of the enterprise view of the government is moving to Shared Services." The EO emphasizes the "strong preference" in procurement for shared IT services, which include email, cloud, and cyber services. Shared Services will also be one of the primarily focuses of the newly created American Technology Council.

CompTIA’s New and Emerging Technologies (NET) Committee announced today that Chuck Brooks, Vice President of Sutherland Government Solutions will serve as the 2017 Chairman of the New and Emerging Technologies Committee.

CompTIA has joined the recently created Bipartisan Policy Center’s Coalition to Modernize American Infrastructure. CompTIA has stated that a 21st century infrastructure ecosystem includes transportation (roads, bridges and airports), water (public utilities) and energy (electric grid) that is layered by cross-cutting, secure, smart technology and enabled by ubiquitous broadband connectivity and sensors.

Earlier this month, bipartisan legislation was introduced in both the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives to help state, local and tribal governments more effectively counter cyber-threats.

With the growing and insatiable demand of data and connectivity from government and consumers, satellite solutions need to have information assurance. We are in an era of increased threat from elaborate data breaches and denials of service; these threats to information assurance are on the rise and are increasing in sophistication.

Looking into 2017, we face difficulties on the cybersecurity front on many different levels.

The timing is right for satellite derived broadcast services. There is pent-up demand for data across different verticals and because of the Internet of Things, we are seeing the emergence of fascinating new services across industries and across geographical borders.

The Smart Cities Council and federal government kicked off Smart Cities Week with announcements of $80 million dollars in new investments to help cities leverage smart cities technologies. CompTIA is playing an integral role in these investments, offering a host of products and services through the Smart Cities Council Challenge Grants.
