A division of Computers for Youth distributed laptops to 775 sixth grade students and their families at local, low-income middle schools in Atlanta thanks to a $12,500 donation from three of CompTIA’s Communities and Councils. CompTIA will retire a handful of educational materials at the end of 2014 to freshen up its library and make room for better tools related to the fast-changing healthcare market. “Our initial take on healthcare IT didn’t fully embrace the exciting things that are happening in that market, so we’re going to go back to the drawing board with member help,” said Stephanie Morgan, CompTIA’s director of member education.

The ITSS Community dedicated $5,000 of its annual charitable fund to empower NPower, a group that brings the tech community together for social good, helps people at a disadvantage and focuses its support on nonprofits.

Public speaking isn’t easy, but sharing the story of how you got into IT can be inspirational, especially to girls and young women looking for new career opportunities. Cristina Greysman of Sungard AS shares her experience with Dream IT, an initiative by CompTIA’s Advancing Women in IT Community, and why it’s important to spread the word, no matter the size of the audience. “It doesn’t matter if it’s eight people or 150 — it’s a valuable conversation,” Greysman said.

Gordon Russell, 24, wanted to move his career beyond updating, deleting and modifying data entry records, so he used CompTIA and the new study aid CertMaster to help him earn the IT certifications he’d need to move up the career ladder. “CertMaster is an amazing learning tool,” he said.

Many students in the diverse student body of Hoover Elementary in Cedar Rapids come from struggling families and nearly a quarter of their population is learning English for the first time. A donation from one of CompTIA’s member communities has been used on technology buys that will help students stay on track and help the school close its achievement gap.
