New Report Offers Details on Technology Industry in Oklahoma

CompTIA Cyberstates 2017™ finds state is home to 4,000 tech businesses and 36,000-plus tech professionals

Oklahoma City, Okla. – Technology industry employment in Oklahoma was essentially flat in 2016, according to Cyberstates 2017™, the definitive annual analysis of the nation’s tech industry released today by CompTIA, the world’s leading technology association.

The tech industry workforce declined by an estimated 388 jobs, a drop of about 1 percent. Oklahoma is still home to an estimated 36,336 tech industry workers.

Technology occupations across all other industries in Oklahoma – the second component of the tech workforce – reached an estimated 63,200 in 2016.

The tech sector accounts for an estimated 2.8 percent ($5.2 billion) of the overall state economy.

The annualized average wage for a tech industry worker in Oklahoma was an estimated $69,700 in 2016, 59 percent higher than the average state wage ($43,900).

Other Key Findings

  • Oklahoma is home to an estimated 4,052 tech business establishments.
  • Among the leading tech occupations in the state are computer user support specialists (7,500), application software developers (4,190) and computer and information systems managers (3,080).
  • The strongest year-over-year job growth occurred in the categories of computer systems design and IT services (+ 1.5 percent) and engineering services (+ 1.2 percent).
  • Employers across Oklahoma posted job openings for nearly 3,600 technology positions in Q4 2016.
