CompTIA Statement on Inclusion of CLOUD Act in Congressional Funding Bill

Mar 22, 2018

WASHINGTON – CompTIA, the world’s leading technology association, released the following statement from CompTIA’s executive vice president for public advocacy Elizabeth Hyman regarding the inclusion of the Clarifying Lawful Overseas Use of Data Act (CLOUD Act) in the omnibus funding bill:

“CompTIA has strongly supported the idea that Congress and not our courts need to address the issues of providing a framework for how law enforcement can access data across borders. We appreciate the work for congressional leaders to include the CLOUD Act in the omnibus spending bill.

“Our current laws have struggled to keep up with changing technology and created confusion in recent years for industry, law enforcement, and individuals using cloud services on how and when law enforcement can gain access to data stored abroad. The CLOUD Act will help to instate new standards for law enforcement to gain access to this data when it's needed for investigations, and will also protect users' privacy rights.”
