CompTIA Commends Reintroduction of the Mobile Workforce State Income Tax Simplification Act

Mar 8, 2018

WASHINGTONCompTIA, the Computing Technology Industry Association, the world’s leading technology association, today applauded Senator John Thune (R-S.D.) and Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), as well as Representative Mike Bishop (R-Mich.) and Representative Hank Johnson (D-Ga.), for reintroducing the Mobile Workforce State Income Tax Simplification Act of 2017. The bill was passed by the House of Representatives last Congress by a simple voice vote and enjoyed similar broad, bipartisan support in the Senate but was never voted on. It is critical for both chambers to take up the bill and get it signed into law in the 115th Congress.

“The Mobile Workforce State Income Tax Simplification Act would make it easier to comply with state personal income tax laws by reducing the burdens placed both on employees who travel outside their resident states for temporary periods and their employers,” said Elizabeth Hyman, CompTIA’s executive vice president for public advocacy. “The bill would establish a national standard for state income taxation of non-residents, allowing employee wages or compensation to be taxed only by the employee’s resident state, and those states in which an employee is present and performing employment duties for more than 30 days during a calendar year. This legislation does not exempt employees from state taxes, rather it provides much needed clarity for an increasingly mobile workforce. Unfortunately, many individuals are unaware of the current patchwork of non-resident state income tax filing rules, and employers must incur extraordinary expenses to comply with withholding requirements. CompTIA supports legislation that simplifies tax requirements for nonresident employees and employers.”
