The complexity of your business increases exponentially when you bring on your first employee. The change actually begins before that, with potential liability kicking in as soon you publish or distribute a classified advertisement or web posting for a job opening. Hiring that first employee should be an exciting time for your business, and it definitely can be if you’ve carefully planned and implemented the appropriate strategy.

Companies with several employees have their own challenges as well; managing their human resources without a dedicated employee to run this critical business function. The HR responsibilities multiply as the employee count increases, along with all the other duties within the organization, and it can be difficult keeping your company in compliance with all the Federal, state and local employment regulations.

Many members of the recently introduced Small Business Owners Community at CompTIA have encountered these challenges in their own business, and have been hard at work developing a “tool chest” of resources and best practices to help other companies overcome those obstacles. Today, the association introduced one of these new member resources; the CompTIA Customizable Employee Handbook .

If you don’t have a guide that outlines your company policies and procedures for your employees to read and use as a reference, this tool will allow you to quickly customize one to your business’ specific needs. The process starts with a specially developed and easy-to-follow questionnaire, with the information automatically populated in the appropriate areas in the final document. Web links are provided for each state, helping guide you through any specific requirements for your region of the country.  The resulting handbook allows you to provide each employee a written record of your expectations and their responsibilities.

This template was developed to meet the specific needs of IT businesses, with significant input from the IT channel community. You can be confident the resulting guide addresses the workplace policies relevant to your VAR or MSP business, including provisions for remote employee and trade secrets that are a concern for many channel businesses.

The CompTIA Employee Handbook also covers:

  • The Employment Relationship

  • Hiring

  • New Employee Information

  • Employee Classifications

  • Hours

  • Pay Policies

  • Employee Benefits

  • Use of Company Property

  • Leave and Time Off

  • Performance

  • Workplace Behavior

  • Health and Safety

  • Employee Privacy

  • Computers, Email, and Internet

  • Employee Records

  • Drugs and Alcohol

  • Conflicts of Interest

  • Discrimination and Harassment

  • Complaint Policies

  • Ending Employment

As with the Legal Resources recently introduced by the association, this tool is FREE to CompTIA members. That means you can customize an employee handbook to meet your company’s specific needs and spend the savings in other areas of your business (especially those that drive revenue)!
