As an executive committee member to the U.S. Information Technology Office (USITO), CompTIA joined fellow associations and dozens of tech companies for the USITO spring board meeting to discuss China policies that are of importance to the sector. The meeting took place May 4 in Washington, D.C., with USITO staff traveling in from Beijing. The discussion focused on the political environment and strategies to approach the slew of policies and other intrusive measures that are designed to be implemented with the Cybersecurity Law that takes effect on June 1. The board had an opportunity to meet with Tim Wineland, Deputy Assistant for China Affairs; Alan Turley, Deputy Assistant Secretary for China in the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration; and Chris Painter, Coordinator for Cyber Issues at the U.S. Department of State.
Chris Millward, USITO president and the USITO policy team joined CompTIA at the D.C. office for a member webinar regarding the overall trends in the policy and regulatory developments that could affect U.S. companies. Millward said in his remarks that Chinese policymakers are moving fast to get ahead of the curve in emerging areas such robotics, artificial intelligence and virtual reality – areas where U.S. policy making is in early stages. There is a sense in China that the future is theirs to command as they work to set the terms of the discussion and direction of the industry in those areas. Their ability to set their terms is important to their outward facing agenda.
