On May 8th, CompTIA Advocacy attended the House Subcommittee on Oversight and Subcommittee on Research and Technology hearing “Leveraging Blockchain Technology to Improve Supply Chain Management and Combat Counterfeit Goods.” Hearing witnesses included:
- Dr. Douglas Maughan, cyber security division director, Science and Technology Directorate, Department of Homeland Security
- Mr. Robert “Bob” Chiaviello, IPR counsel, Nuby Law
- Mr. Michael White, head of global trade digitization, Maersk
- Mr. Chris Rubio, vice president global customs brokerage staff, UPS
Though the hearing was largely educational in nature, there were still a few interesting points that were discussed.
According to Maughn, the Science and Technology Directorate "must aggressively work with its research, development, test and evaluation partners throughout government and industry so Homeland Security applications of blockchain and distributed ledger technology are effective and trusted." Maughn also stated that "I think the applications are almost limitless."
Chairman Abraham added that “we recognize [blockchain] technologies can benefit both the public and private sectors, and seek to understand just how.”
