Why trade wars over tariffs are not the answer for tech

Trump should work with Congress to address the challenges in China and update agreements with Canada, Mexico

Tech companies are a key driver of the United States’ current economic growth, with the industry accounting for about 7.2 percent of the overall U.S. economy and tech exports directly supporting 800,000 jobs in 2016, according to recent research.

In California alone — which ranks first among states in tech services exports and second in tech product exports — more than 180,000 jobs are directly connected to the state’s tech trade.

But sustaining that growth and the good-paying jobs that have come with it will be almost impossible if the Trump administration continues escalating what is rapidly shaping up to be a high-risk gambit with Canada, China, the European Union and Mexico.
