Community Interests Drive All-Star Line-Up at Upcoming Canadian Community Meeting

CompTIA’s Canadian IT Business Community will touch on emerging technologies, engaging the younger generation and how its members can build strong, collaborative workforces at its upcoming fall meeting in Toronto. Find out more about this action-packed agenda.
At the beginning of the year, the Canadian IT Business Community wrestled with what matters most to them as they sought to build their community agenda for 2014. As members weighed in, some strong and interesting themes emerged:
  • Driving new revenue through big data, mobility and cloud;
  • Engaging the younger generation; and
  • Building strong, distributed and collaborative workforces

Throughout 2014, the community has been actively addressing these themes in the form of initiatives, community meetings and even through their charitable activity. All of this is culminating in a fantastic, action-packed agenda for the community’s fall meeting in Toronto, scheduled for Sept. 17. Here are some of the highlights:

Big Data, Mobility & Cloud

Les King, a big data evangelist and director of databases, analytics and big data solutions at IBM, will be speaking on the trends and opportunities in big data. Get a sneak peak into IBM’s plans and hear the industry forecast for the next several years.

Mobility and cloud come together when Alec Saunders, vice president for QNX Cloud and QNX Software Systems (Blackberry), presents on the Internet of Things. Saunders will demonstrate how emerging technologies and innovation are transforming the customer experience and generating tremendous new opportunities for Canadian businesses.

Engaging the Younger Generation

“The medium is the message” has never been truer with millennials, social media and collaboration. Tamara Vorobeitchik, of Global Talent Management at Celestica, will present a case study on building flexible, collaborative and mobile social media platforms in the workplace. Hear from this millennial on what is working in today’s business.

Dream IT — a program by CompTIA’s Advancing Women in IT Community — is reaching 10,000 people this year with the message that IT is a great place for women and girls. Jean Mork Bredeson, from Service 800, and Kevin Hiebert, from The Print Package, will explain how this program is helping young women enter the IT workforce.

Building Strong, Distributed and Collaborative Workforces

John Mehrmann, of Brainhunter will provide answers on how to build a workforce that has the skills and people you need; balancing the need for full time and contract labor; and how to effectively recruit and retain the next generation. Join us for a reprise of this highly popular presentation from ChannelCon 2014.

In addition to these key themes, Alan Young, of Tactix, will be back to provide an update on Canada’s political and public policy environment. The meeting will also provide key updates on community happenings in 2014 such as our new community brand and online presence, charity selection, initiative work and more.

This is a meeting you don’t want to miss. Register now and we’ll see you on Sept. 17 in Toronto.

Jim Hamilton is CompTIA’s vice president of member communities.
