Accelero Digital Leverages its Trustmark to Create a Self-Reliant Team

Software development firm Accelero Digital used the assessment and best practices included in CompTIA Trustmark+ accreditation to identify and close potential gaps in the business. For example, Accelero now incorporates more formalized management roles and reporting mechanisms, which have reduced the company’s dependence on micromanagement.

Accelero Digital, a Bridgend-based software development firm that specializes in bespoke projects, manages the entire software lifecycle, from capturing requirements through design and development to ongoing maintenance and support. The company’s founding directors recognized that, as the business expanded, they were becoming less involved in day-to-day detail of projects and customer interaction.

They identified a number of potential gaps in the business that would inhibit this necessary change in their roles in the business. New procedures — plus a refinement of existing procedures and a knowledge transfer process — were required to enable the change  while maintaining service levels and  their trademark attention to detail in dealing with customers.

After an internal review, the directors chose to pursue a CompTIA Trustmark+ accreditation. As operations director Wynne Crompton recalled, “We chose CompTIA for accreditation because it is IT-business focused and we anticipated that it would be an efficient way to review the business and processes.”

“For us,” he said, “it was a way to guide and potentially save effort while gaining the benefits of an external view and rigorous standards based best practice.”

Working with their assessor, the directors set about applying the program tools to various parts of the business, from software development, project management and customer experience to staff appraisals, staff induction and administrative aspects of business management.

“The assessor’s approach was to facilitate accreditation while helping us to identify areas for improvement in order to achieve our own goals for the business,” Crompton said.

Since achieving accreditation, Accelero has noted a range of business improvements. “The business has been strengthened by capturing good working practice and seeing it applied consistently. For instance, we have more formalized management roles and reporting mechanisms,” Crompton said. “This has reduced dependence on the day-to-day involvement of directors in dealing with customer queries and routine decision making, [like when] planning and reallocating staff between projects.”
