Raising Expectations with Generation Tech Mentoring

In March of 2009, CompTIA embarked on a new philanthropic relationship with Chicago Tech Academy (ChiTech), a new tech-focused school to develop the next generation of leaders. ChiTech connects students with leading technology professionals and works with more than 100 industry partners to provide mentoring, field trips, work experience, and other opportunities so students graduate ready for college and careers. Below is a blog post by Matt Hancock, executive director of ChiTech.

At the end of May, we launched our one-to-one industry mentoring program, Generation Tech. Twenty-six 10th graders met their mentors for the first time: technology CEOs, CIOs, entrepreneurs and other professionals.  Both the adults and our students were a little nervous about this "blind date". But as soon as they shook hands, nervousness gave way to beaming smiles, and the conversation flowed as they found out just how much they share in common. Many of the mentors and students already have had follow-up meetings over coffee or at the office.

What's most exciting is seeing the changes in the students. They walk down the hallway a little prouder, they have a new sense of purpose, and they love talking about the relationship they're building with their mentors.

“I've wanted a mentor since I came here – somebody to push me, somebody to have an effect on me,” said Billy Clark, ChiTech sophomore.

Over the next 12 to 18 months, we’ll be scaling up Generation Tech to include all of our 10th and 11th graders. But we need help – we need more mentors. We're looking for open-minded, flexible, and committed individuals to mentor and inspire. Help with homework, take them to a game or bat around new business ideas. If you're interested or if you know someone who's interested in becoming a mentor, contact Amanda Prorak, mentoring program coordinator.

Not in the local Chicago area, but still want to help?  $500 provides a ChiTech student with a dedicated mentor for one year. That's at least 12 face-to-face sessions, ongoing supportive communication, and six group outings.  You can donate online quickly and easily.

Thanks for your support and for helping to change the lives of our students.
