Strong leadership is one of the single most important aspects of business excellence, and is a hallmark of many CompTIA members, especially those featured on PCR’s 2015 top 50 UK IT Execs list, an annual list by the highly regarded trade publication.
Paul Tomlinson, for example, who will be speaking at the upcoming UK Community Channel meeting in Bristol, joins the list of CEOs and MDs who have made a mark over the last year, contributing to and inspiring the tech industry. Last year, he presented his approach to leadership in a speech last year with this takeaway: Make your team the heart of your business.
As businesses grow, many struggle to maintain their team dynamic and end up with a high turnover of staff. Tomlinson stresses that the team is at the heart of a brilliant business, and offers a his four-stage approach to getting a great team and improving your business: work hard, have fun, develop individuals and continually improve service.
Tomlinson believes that training and humour in the office are hugely important in getting staff on board. If employees enjoy working there, they will ultimately feel invested in the company and want to stay for longer, helping your staff retention. Another key to staff motivation is involving them in the business aims. Tomlinson’s approach is to focus on attitudes and behaviours, values and goals and reinforce them at every stage, for example using them as screensavers and posting them around the office. It’s important to break down business aims employees can see that hitting their individual targets will mean that the company hits its targets.
This is a particularly poignant point to consider in a highly competitive market where skilled employees are at a premium. Putting his employees first and leading in an engaging way are the reasons why he was featured on the list, made by those close to the industry, with many other CompTIA members.
